One is a civil-minded lass called Ivy, the other someone she only meets at night – a lad with a singular graffiti tag and a mind for violence and chaos, who calls himself The Joker… She also finds school is a drag, she also finds the whole neighbourhood is being redeveloped by a large and uncaring corporation – but she also finds two characters that will have a big impact on her life. Expecting a year-long furlough from life with her mother, she finds her gran dead and herself with no option but to stay with a bunch of drag queens. But here she is new in town, and the town is Gotham City. ![]() She always, to me, seems new in town, even if she's been around a long time, for she always has a very fresh attitude, and seems to look out of those large eyes at everything anew each time. Summary: How Harleen Quinzel might become the Joker's hyperactive partner in crime Harley Quinn, seen through a very, very PC lens. ![]() ![]() ![]() The whole series could have been pared down to two books, and focused less on politics. I guess this was realistic, but yet I could not help but feel disappointed. It's pretty clear that in Red Mars, one of the issues that led to the bigger problem on Red Mars was overpopulation, and I feel that humanity was just basically given a free pass at the end of the trilogy because now humans are expanding to planets beyond Mars. Blue Mars was not without its fantastic (and I do mean fantastic parts) but it was also slogged down with some really slow-moving parts. I absolutely loved Red Mars, and enjoyed Green Mars. Green Mars was not quite as strong, but still a decent read. ![]() ![]() It was a chance find in a Little Free Library (seriously, support your local LFL!) and after reading the ending, I absolutely wanted more, and to learn what happens to the characters that made it to the end of Red Mars. The first book in this series, Red Mars, was absolutely enthralling. ![]() ![]() ![]() Wanting to help, Amitabha Buddha awarded her eleven heads with which to hear the cries of the world, but when she heard all the cries and reached out to address the needs of so many, her two arms shattered. Eventually, she became known by many names, including Kannon in Japan and Quan Am in Vietnam.Īccording to legend, Kwan Yin tried so strenuously to alleviate the suffering of beings that her head split into eleven pieces. By the ninth century, Kwan Yin had become the main representation of compassion in China, and from there her veneration spread across Asia. He was introduced to China in the early centuries of the Common Era, but apparently there was a hunger for a feminine face of compassion, and by the eighth century female forms of Avalokiteshvara emerged. ![]() Kwan Yin originated in India as Avalokiteshvara, the male bodhisattva of compassion. The idea is that a bodhisattva-a being of great realization who vows to forego enlightenment until all sentient beings are liberated-can manifest in whatever form will most effectively free beings from suffering. Some Buddhist schools present her as male and female interchangeably. Kwan Yin is the protector of women, children, sailors, fishermen, anyone in trouble, and the sick, disabled, and poor. The embodiment of compassion, Kwan Yin is known as “she who hears the cries of the world.” One of Buddhism’s most beloved bodhisattvas, she also holds a special place in the hearts of people of other faiths, including Daoists and Confucianists. ![]() ![]() And yet, these powers (like all intuitions) do the women no good, as each of their talents deceives them in turn there is really no such thing as a probable future, and they are led down unexpected paths as they make choices that were never quite understood until years later. ![]() In its pages we see three generations of the Sparrow family women learn to live, love, and deal with their unique witchy powers - one who sees all lies for what they are, one who can peer into dreams, and one who catches glimpses of coming death. Written after Hoffman’s runaway hit witchy novel Practical Magic, but before she fully came into her own (in my opinion at least) with the prequel novel The Rules of Magic, this book treads much of the same territory and hits somewhere in between in terms of excellence. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Merwe bottle-feeds a baby baboon while conducting planning meetings with her staff of volunteers, family and Bush people. The strength of this refuge is Marieta van der Merwe, proprietor, or more appropriately called “protector” overseeing the feeding, medical and rehabilitative care of 400 unwanted, mistreated or misunderstood animals. A contrast to “Gorillas in the Mist” and “The Cry of the Kalahari” where the animals were sought out in their natural habitat and studied, this book paints a discerning, enjoyable, but not romanticized picture of the plethora of species and individual personalities of the protectorates. Published by National Geographic, “Heart of a Lion” reveals the care given to injured, orphaned or otherwise challenged animals in the Harnas Wildlife foundation in Namibia, Africa.
